When the Leader Becomes the Student: Lessons from Brené Brown

Today’s Lesson in Leadership: Stay Teachable, Stay Inspired

As a leader, it’s easy to get comfortable in the areas where we excel. I consider myself a master of certain things—like the body roll💃🏽, teaching Ballet classes in my sleep 🩰, or breaking down a petit allegro like it’s second nature. But when it comes to managing the intricacies of a business, like spreadsheets, budgets, and strategy, I need help. And that’s okay!

The world of coaching is booming, for good reason. It’s become a multi-billion dollar industry because so many people—leaders included—are dealing with insecurities and limiting beliefs. We need people in our corner to help us navigate these hurdles. For the past three years, I’ve been on a journey of therapy and coaching, and I thought I had my limiting beliefs in check. But it’s amazing how quickly they can resurface, especially when life throws curveballs like a Mercury retrograde or a string of grant rejections.

At one point, my therapist was on vacation, and my business coach was traveling, leaving me to face these challenges on my own. But here’s the beauty of being on this journey for a while: I knew where to turn. I leaned on my journal to process my thoughts and feelings, using it as a tool to pull myself out of the spiral of self-doubt. Self-awareness has become even more critical for me as a leader and role model for young girls. I no longer have the luxury of brushing off emotional intelligence, and quite frankly, I wouldn’t want to.

Today, I had the incredible privilege of being on a call with Brené Brown, and she introduced a concept that resonated deeply with me: Metacognition—the ability to think about our thinking. This idea of observing ourselves, understanding why we move the way we do, and gaining insight into our thought processes felt like a lightbulb moment. As I reflected, I realized that sustainable leadership is all about staying teachable, being open to learning, and seeking out opportunities to grow from those who know more than I do.

That’s the magic of leadership—it’s not about knowing everything, but about having the humility to recognize when you need help, and the wisdom to find it. So here I am, inspired beyond words by today’s call, writing this blog as a reminder to myself and others: Stay curious. Stay open. Stay teachable.✨
